There is much grey area and flexibility in your pursuit for work, but let’s just be simple and break it down into two categories.
- Learn a skill that most people don’t have the time or patience to learn. Ideally, you will be able to learn a skill that doesn’t require a lot of money or a college tuition. But doctors, professors, lawyers, accountants, and other professionals that need certification to operate fit in this category.
- Start a business based around work that many people aren’t willing to perform. Examples include trash removal, working in a landfill, physical labor, construction, plumbing, among many others. Remember: The laws of supply and demand apply not only to commodities but to the choices people make.
Let’s start with the first category. What are some skills you can develop that require analytical thinking or time to learn?
- Learn how to develop applications for computers, smart phones, and tablets.
- Become an expert in math, English, and other often challenging subjects. Offer private tutoring.
- Use your new English skills to offer editorial work, content management, and other writing help.
- Good at social media? Start a social media management service for other businesses near and far.
- Have an eye for fashion? Buy used clothes and resell at a higher margin.
- Become a personal chef. Just don’t eat all the food and watch out for food allergies!
- Become a photographer. Weddings, senior photos, baby photos, seasonal photos, and family photos are just the beginning of the opportunities you’ll find.
- Love music? Become a DJ. You’re looking at around a $5,ooo investment, but you’ll see that money back as you can charge $600 – $1,500 for weddings and other events.
You get the idea. Let’s move on to the second category.
- House cleaning
- Lawn care
- Landscaping
- House renovation
- Clean out crawl spaces
- Small scale moving service
- Furniture delivery
- Event planner
- Elderly care
- Day care for children, the elderly, and even pets! Just be sure the old people and kids aren’t hanging out with the dogs…they might get fleas!
- Become a nanny
- Become a manny
- Help people care for their pets. If you have an extra room and a yard, you can have pets stay with you for people who are going on vacation. Dog walking is also popular.
- Pest control!
- The list goes on.
